16 / 20

Determine the deviation, given:

True heading: 124º
Magnetic heading: 120º
Compass deviation card reading: ‘’FOR 120º STEER 114º’’

  • A
    6ºE
  • B
    6ºW
  • C
    4ºW
  • D
    4ºE

The Compass Card is usually located underneath the Direct Reading Magnetic Compass and tells the pilot which Compass Heading to fly in order to achieve a desired Magnetic Heading.

The difference between the Compass Heading and the Magnetic Heading is referred to as Compass Deviation.

Compass deviation is defined by the number of degrees by which unwanted magnetic fields deflect the compass from magnetic north indication (desired indication).

Deviation (-) West => Compass Best

Deviation (+) East => Compass Least

  • In this case, to obtain a magnetic heading of 120º we must fly a compass heading of 114º. Therefore, we have a deviation of 6ºE.
