A Primary Radar is a conventional radar sensor that illuminates a large portion of space with an electromagnetic wave and receives back the reflected waves from targets within that space.

Primary Radar is used to detect aircraft not equipped with a Secondary Radar Transponder.
In order to achieve this function the Primary Radar uses a directional antenna.

A directional antenna or beam antenna is an antenna which radiates or receives greater power in specific directions allowing increased performance and reduced interference from unwanted sources. Ideally to use for Air Traffic Control Services to serve a large number of aircrafts.
