Refer to figure.
During a VFR flight, the Pilot after some time finds him/herself overflying a lighted obstacle that was not intended to be directly overflown. What does this indicate about the actual flight conditions?

  • A

The northerly wind is stronger than expected.

  • B

The southerly wind is stronger than expected.

  • C

The aircraft is flying at a faster ground speed than expected.

  • D

The aircraft is flying at a slower ground speed than expected.

Refer to figure.
The most likely cause for the aircraft flying above the lighted obstacle, right off the intended track, is that the actual wind (direction and/or speed) is different from the forecast wind. This can lead to a deviation from the planned track, despite maintaining the planned heading and true airspeed.

More specifically:

  • A northerly wind stronger than expected, or
  • A southerly wind lighter than expected

would cause the aircraft to deviate from the planned track and fly above the lighted obstacle.

Flying at a faster or slower groundspeed than expected, would not affect the actual track, but would decrease or increase the flight time, correspondingly.
