  • B

  • C

A deep valley with almost no changes in elevation.

  • D

A ridge with a peak at an elevation of 11 283 ft.

Refer to figure.
This question tests whether we understand how topography (terrain) is represented on aeronautical charts. Luckily, this is represented in the same way as most other topographical maps and is quite intuitive to understand especially with the use of colours.

What we see is a contour lines surrounding two high peaks at 11 283 ft AMSL and 10 686 ft. The two peaks are connected within the contour lines, which shows us a mountain ridge. The highest peak of the ridge is the peak at 11 283 ft. The high areas enclosed by contour lines are marked by darkening brown colours, until they turn white which represents snow-capped peaks.

Note: This question is seen in HCAA with coordinates given and there was a requirement to locate the marking in order to answer. Please provide any further feedback available in the comments. Thank you all!

A mostly flat area. → INCORRECT

  • There are lots of contour lines in the area, indicating a changing elevation with steep slopes.

Two individual peaks at 11 283 ft and 10 686 ft. → INCORRECT

  • This is almost correct, except that the peaks are not entirely individual. They are both at the top of a mountain ridge.

A deep valley with almost no changes in elevation. → INCORRECT

  • A valley does feature within the box, between mountains, however the valley is not that deep. Again, the area has steep changes in elevation, and the main feature is the mountain ridge.

A ridge with a peak at an elevation of 11 283 ft. → CORRECT

  • This is the most correct answer, and it accurately describes the main feature shown in the box.
