Radio Altimeter Operating Area

Aeroplanes making auto-coupled approaches and automatic landings (irrespective of weather conditions) use a radio altimeter input to determine their height. For this reason slope changes should be avoided or kept to a minimum in the area before the threshold of a precision approach runway. This area is called the radio altimeter operating area.

Length of this area is 300m from the threshold.

Width is 120m from the extended centre line and symmetrical about the extended centre line.

In special circumstances the width may be reduced to 60m provided its not unsafe.

Where slope changes cannot be avoided, the rate of change between two consecutive slopes should not exceed 2 per cent per 30m.
