Refer to figure or chart "E LO 2" from Jeppesen GSPRM 2017.
A flight is planned along route T420, course 330°, FL380, inbound TRENT VOR/DME (TNT). A descent should be initiated to pass waypoint ELVOS in FL200. Calculate the Top of Descent (ToD) relating to TRENT for a ground speed of 200 kt and a rate of descent of 1500 ft/min.
(Note: when using the original chart from GSPRM both locations can be found in chart section 7 C)
Note: A similar question with different values exists due to recent feedback - question 333280.
Height to lose 18 000 ft: 38 000 ft - 20 000 ft = 18 000 ft
It will take 12 minutes if the rate of descent is 1 500 ft/min: 18 000 ft / 1 500 ft/min = 12 min
The distance to be covered in 12 minutes with a GS of 200 kt is: 200 kt / 60 min × 12 min = 40 NM
Add 25 NM for the distance between TRENT and ELVOS to get the distance for the ToD relating to TRENT: 40 NM + 25 NM = 65 NM
