Flight planning chart for an aeroplane, states that the time to reach FL190 at a given gross mass is 22 minutes and the distance travelled is 66 NM (no wind). What will be the distance travelled with a average head wind component of 35 kt?
  • A
    61 NM
  • B
    85 NM
  • C
    79 NM
  • D
    53 NM

NGM = NAM x GS ÷ TAS
NGM = NAM ± [wind component x Time (min)] ÷ 60

At first this question appears confusing. But let's start by determining the TAS at which the aircraft was flying:
Time to climb = 22 min
Ground distance covered = 66 nm (no wind)

  • Speed = Distance ÷ Time (min) x 60 = 180 kt
Head wind = 35 kts.
A headwind does not affect the time to climb, but it will reduce the ground distance covered during the climb.
  • Ground speed = 180 kt - 35 kt = 145 kt
Now we have the necessary data to calculate the NGM:
  • NGM = NAM x GS ÷ TAS
    NGM = 66 NM x 145 kt ÷ 180 kt
    NGM = 53 NM
