On an aeroplane with an autothrottle system, can thrust be set manually?
  • A
Yes, by disarming the autothrottle system.
  • B
Yes, by pushing the go-around switch.
  • C
No, setting thrust manually is not possible.
  • D
Yes, by entering the required thrust with the manual N1 selector button.
The auto-throttle is a system that simply makes the life of the flight crew easier. Without the need to manually adjust the thrust, which is very energy-consuming, the flight crew can better direct their resources on solving more important issues. However, as with any enhancing system, the flight crew can disconnect the auto-throttle at any moment and set the thrust manually. The pilot flying could use manual thrust whenever the auto-thrust system is inoperative (or has a malfunction), or for practicing and keep his/her manual flying skills at a high standard.
