Which of the following statements with regard to the PET (Point of Equal Time) is correct?
  • A
Endurance is not relevant when calculating the point of equal time.
  • B
Endurance is relevant when calculating the point of equal time.
  • C
The point of equal time is a number which is entered in field 19 of the ATC flight plan.
  • D
When calculating the point of equal time fuel reserves should be accounted for.

Note: Since the terms PET and PSR are not present in EASA Air Ops, these questions are less likely to appear in the exam.

The Point of Equal Time (PET), or sometimes is referred to as Critical Point (CP), is a point on a track, in relation to two suitable airfields, from which it is the same time for an aircraft to fly to either.

Distance to PET = (GS home x Distance) / (GS out + GS home)
Time to PET = Distance to PET / GS out

  • Neither of the formulas to calculate either distance or time to PET require endurance => Safe Endurance is used to calculate Point Of Safe Return (PSR).
