QNH is:
  • A
    the setting that will give zero indication on the airfield.
  • B
    the standard pressure setting of 1013 hPa.

    the airfield barometric pressure.

    the equivalent sea level pressure at the airfield.

The QNH is the calculated pressure at MSL in ISA conditions. It is calculated using the QFE value measured at the aerodrome and brought to ISA conditions. Therefore, with the QNH set in your altimeter sub-scale, you will be able to read the airfield elevation. The opposite is also true, if you want to know the QNH, you just need to set the airfield elevation in your altimeter and the QNH will be indicated in the sub-scale.

The QNH is used at low levels, below the transition level. It is a regional pressure setting, so during your cross-country when passing from one region to another, you will be given a new QNH value. Aerodromes might have different QNH values from the regional ones, so you need to comply with it when approaching an airfield.
