VOLMET is available on VHF and HF frequencies, where VHF-VOLMET covers regional areas and HF- VOLMET covers international areas. As the VHF radio only provides a local service, long haul flights use HF.

Note: The VOLMET transmits METARs for a specific group of airfields at a given time whereas the ATIS is a continuous report on VHF for an individual airfield.
