What are the consequences of increasing the stopway length of a runway?
Refer to figure.
Accelerate-stop distance available (ASDA) expresses the distance available to begin the take-off, abandon the take-off and stop on the ground. In some aerodromes a stopway is provided at the end of take-off run available to allow more space for the aircraft to stop on the ground after an abandoned take-off. However, a stopway cannot be used for take-off or landing and does not affect the length of the take-off distane available (TODA), take-off run available (TORA) or the length of the landing distance available (LDA).
Therefore, increasing the length of the stopway will increase the ASDA only (distance available to abandon the take-off and stop on the ground).
- ASDA = TORA + STOPWAY
TORA: Available ground run for take-off.
TODA: Available distance for take-off, from the beginning of the take-off run until reaching a screen height. It includes the clearway if provided.
LDA: Available ground run for landing. Does not include any threshold displacement.
