11 / 20

Refer to figure or CAP758 Figure 3.11.
A helicopter with an All-Up Mass of 8 000 kg must climb from FL60 to FL120 to pass safely over a mountainous area. Given the following information, calculate the approximate distance covered during the climb:

Mean Climb Groundspeed: 91 Kt
Mean rate of climb: Equal to a rate of climb at FL 100
OAT at FL100: +10°C

  • A
    9 NM
  • B
    23 NM
  • C
    11 NM
  • D
    7 NM
Refer to figure.
1. Firstly, determine the Rate of Climb at FL100 from CAP758 Figure 3.11:
  • Enter with Pressure altitude 10 000 ft and move horizontally to the right.
  • Intersect the +10°C temperature line and move vertically down.
  • Intersect the 8 000 kg mass line and continue to the left to read Rate of Climb: 800 ft/min.
2. Calculate the time to climb from FL60 to FL120:
  • Height difference: FL120 - FL60 = 6 000 ft.
  • Time to climb with ROC 800 ft/min: 6 000 ft / 800 ft/min = 7.5 minutes.
3. Thus, the distance covered during the climb is: Mean Climb Groundspeed x Time to climb = 91 kt x 7.5/60 hr = 11.375 NM, closest answer 11 NM.
