Distance from WP 3 to WP 4: 750 NM
TAS out: 430 kt
TAS return: 425 kt
Tailwind component out: 30 kt
Headwind component return: 40 kt

We have wind information and TAS => we need to calculate GS.

  • GS OUT = TAS OUT + Tailwind component out = 430 kt + 30 kt = 460 kt
  • GS RETURN = TAS RETURN - Headwind component return = 425 kt - 40 kt = 385 kt

We can now apply the formulas:
Distance to PET = (GS Return x Distance) / (GS out + GS Return)
Distance to PET = (385 x 750) / (385 + 460)
Distance to PET = 342 NM

Time to PET = Distance to PET / GS out
