If a helicopter was suspended by a cable attached to the CG point, it would be balanced like a See Saw. For helicopters with a single main rotor, the CG is normally very close to the main rotor mast.

Improper Balance of the helicopter’s load can result in serious control problems. The allowable range in which CG may fall in is called the CG Range. The exact CG location and range are specified in each helicopter's Aircraft Flight Manual (AFM).

A helicopter with out-of-balance loading has decreased manoeuvrability since cyclic control is less effective in the opposite direction of the CG location.

The definition of Centre of Gravity is:

• The theoretical point where all of the helicopter’s weight is considered to be concentrated.
• It may also be thought as the point within an object about which all the moments trying to rotate the object are balanced.
• Alternatively, the point of a body through which the sum of the forces of all masses of the body is considered to act.
