What is the effect of an increase in mass on the climb gradient and climb angle?

  • A

Both climb gradient and climb angle will decrease.

  • B

Both climb gradient and climb angle will increase.

  • C

Climb gradient will increase, while climb angle will decrease.

  • D

Climb gradient will decrease, while climb angle will increase.

Refer to figure.
As mass increases, the angle of attack must increase to generate the required lift, tilting the Total Reaction force backwards. So, its horizontal component, the Induced drag, also increases.

If induced drag is multiplied by TAS, gives the Induced power required. Since induced drag increases, so does the Induced power required, shifting the Total power required curve up and, as a result, the power margin (Power available - Power required), which determines the climb performance, reduces.

The reduced climb performance due to the increased mass, will eventually both the climb gradient and climb angle.
