HYPOVIGILANCE
Hypo vigilance is a state of reduced vigilance and attention, which reduces, among other, the abilities to direct attention to perform multiple tasks at the same time. Hypovigilance is characterized by a decrease in sensory perception. Hypovigilance is a lack of attention to detail, it is akin to a microsleep which can occur at any time during the flight, especially during periods of monotony, reduction of workload, during simple and repetitive tasks.
Techniques to avoid the state of hypovigilance can be exercised during long-haul flights, since monotony in the cockpit may create such circumstances. In a multi-crew operation, it is advisable to engage in communication with the other crew member to remain active. It is also possible for crew-members to take planned naps (controlled rest) - these should be short, approx.. 20min. Controlled rest will help the crew maintain effectiveness. Turning on the lights may also help during night flights, but the crew should keep in mind that their night vision will be affected.
Since the question does not mention anything about night flying, we consider the answer "Communicate with each other and take it in turns to have periods of relaxation" to be the correct one.
