An aircraft call sign may be abbreviated when communication has been (1) _____ and (2) _____ is likely to occur.
- ATS has the discretion to shorten some call signs, but not all. Pilots must use the full call sign when establishing communication with a station, and they cannot abbreviate it until ATC has done so first. When there is no possibility of confusion, and communication has been established, abbreviated radiotelephony call signs may be used.
ICAO Annex 10
