Chapter 1. OPERATION OF TRANSPONDERS

1.1.6 Pilots shall not SQUAWK IDENT unless requested by ATC.

The ATC may request the pilots of an aircraft to SQUAWK IDENT in order to confirm their position on the radar screen. In order to SQUAWK IDENT the pilots should press the IDENT button once. When the button is pressed, the transponder indication changes/begins to flash on the controller's radar display for approximately 20 seconds to let the controller identify or cross-check the aircraft position.
