What is the meaning of an area marked as "TMZ"?
Transponder Mandatory Zones (TMZ) are designated areas of airspace where aircraft are required to have and operate a functioning transponder. These zones are often established around busy airports or in areas with high levels of air traffic to enhance safety and facilitate air traffic control operations.
TMZs can be established either within controlled airspace, where air traffic control services are provided, or in uncontrolled airspace. In either case, the purpose of requiring transponder use is to increase the visibility of aircraft to air traffic controllers and other aircraft equipped with secondary surveillance radar (SSR).
Pilots flying into or through TMZs must ensure that their aircraft's transponders are properly functioning and set to the appropriate code as required by local regulations. Failure to comply with TMZ requirements can result in penalties or enforcement actions by aviation authorities.
