What call should be made when on the approach if you are more than 4 miles from the runway threshold, but less than 8 miles?
Refer to figure.
Good to know:
- 'FINAL' → 4 NM
- 'LONG FINAL' → 8 NM
Long final is also valid if the aircraft turns onto final between 4 NM and 8 NM.
Note: Technically there is no 'short final' but the term is however often used to denote a position within 4 NM on final approach. The term ‘final’ is more appropriate for a position withing 4 NM.
ICAO Doc 9432 - Manual of Radiotelephony
4.7 FINAL APPROACH AND LANDING
4.7.1 A “FINAL” report is made when an aircraft turns onto final within 7 km (4 NM) from touchdown. If and when the turn onto final is made at a greater distance, a “LONG FINAL” report is made. If the aircraft is making a straight-in approach, a “LONG FINAL” report is made at about 15 km (8 NM) from touchdown. If no landing clearance is received at that time, a “FINAL” report is made at 7 km (4 NM) from touchdown.
