According to the charts in the AIP, Ashcroft (EGCR) airfield has multiple grass runways. Due to a crosswind, you need to use runway 17 (520 m). Your performance calculations show you need 510 m to land. Considering the NOTAM, can EGCR be planned as an alternate aerodrome for your flight?

  • A

    Yes

  • B

    No

  • C

Yes, but only if the crosswind increases

  • D

    Only during daylight hours

This is a realistic and practical planning question, which shows why you should always check the NOTAMS carefully!

In this case, our performance calculations tell us we have a LDR (Landing Distance Required) of 510 m. This means to be safe and legal, our chosen landing runway must have a LDA (landing distance available) of 510 m or more. We need to consider this when selecting an alternate airport, otherwise we will have picked an unusable alternate!

At the airport we are currently looking at (EGCR) the LDA is normally 520 m. This is greater than our LDR, so we could normally use this airfield as an alternate with the plan to land on this runway. However the NOTAM tells us that due to a displaced threshold, the LDA is now only 500 m. Because this is less than what we require (510 m) we can NOT use EGCR as an alternate aerodrome.

The only way we could is if the wind changed and the crosswind decreased so that we could choose another runway with a suitable LDA, but this is not provided as an answer option.
