Which subpart of the nervous system is responsible to control breathing, digestion, and heart frequency?
Refer to figure.
THE NERVOUS SYSTEM
The nervous system handles sending, receiving, and processing nerve impulses. Acting as the body's control center and communications network, it integrates vast amounts of information and generates responses by transmitting electrochemical impulses through nerves to muscles and glands. All muscles and organs depend on these nerve impulses for proper function.
It is divided into:
i) Central Nervous System (CNS)
ii) Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS): The PNS connects the brain and spinal cord to the body. It sends sensory information to the brain for perception and sends commands from the brain to control muscles and organs. The PNS also manages reflex actions, like pulling away from pain, without needing conscious thought. It's vital for sensing the environment and coordinating movements throughout the body.
- Autonomic Nervous System (ANS): The ANS is a PNS part that regulates involuntary processes in the body. It controls functions such as heart rate, digestion, breathing, and glandular secretion. The ANS operates without conscious control and helps maintain internal balance (homeostasis).
