What is the most imminent danger when an aircraft is struck by lightning?
Refer to figure.
Lightning is a huge electrical discharge that flows between clouds, from a cloud to air, or from a cloud to the ground. It is most likely to occur within about 5 000 ft of the freezing level. Temperature between +10°C and -10°C.
Lightning damage caused by excessive heating can occur at both the entry and exit points on the airframe. The severity of the strike can result in damage ranging from a small pin-sized burn hole to substantial burning or delamination of the skin. Aircraft constructed from composite materials are particularly vulnerable because the arc cannot conduct as easily through the skin, potentially leading to explosive physical damage. If your aircraft is struck by lightning, it must be inspected by a qualified engineer to assess the damage. Components may need to be replaced, and instruments calibrated.
