A ridge of high pressure is an elongated area of relatively high pressure that forms between two low-pressure (cyclonic) systems within a family of depressions.
Ridges are represented by isobars extending outward from an anticyclone and are always rounded in a “U” shape, in contrast to the “V” shape typically seen in a trough.
The weather within a ridge is generally similar to that of a high-pressure (anticyclonic) area, calm and stable, often marking a brief period of good weather between two depressions.
- "Col": A neutral area between two highs and two lows; essentially a saddle point in pressure patterns.
- "Front": A boundary between two different air masses (e.g. cold front, warm front).
- "Trough": An elongated area of low pressure, the opposite of a ridge.
