IMC. The symbol used to designate instrument meteorological conditions.
VMC. The symbol used to designate visual meteorological conditions.

Instrument meteorological conditions. Meteorological conditions expressed in terms of visibility, distance from cloud, and ceiling, less than the minima specified for visual meteorological conditions.

The Visual Meteorological Conditions (VMC) are weather limitations that should apply in order to be allowed to fly under visual flight rules (VFR) which means fly using outside references like the horizon.

When the weather is below the VMC limitations, IMC (Instrument Meteorological Conditions) exist. In this case, the pilot should fly under IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) which means fly solely by using the flight instruments of the aircraft without using any outside references.

The figure provides the VMC limitations. When these limitations do not apply, IMC prevails.
