How should an Otto engine be shut down?
Generator: Most aircraft require some source of electrical power to run equipment such as the navigation system, lights, built-in radios, landing and taxiing equipment, and other systems. Aircraft produced after the 1960s generally run this equipment on an alternator, but classic aircraft use a generator for these functions. If the generator shuts down, electricity to the systems will be provided by battery.
Propeller lever: Changes in the propeller pitch, whether directly with pitch control (Prop Lever backwards) or indirectly with engine RPM control, can increase or decrease engine speed, increase or decrease Prop drag. When the Propeller Lever moves full backwards, it changes the pitch angle of the propellers and brings them to a feathered position. No trust at all produced at feather position.
The Throttle Lever (The Power Lever): The Throttle Lever position, within the limits imposed by full Throttle height, determines the boost pressure that is delivered by the supercharger (controlling airflow to the engine). The Throttle is, in effect, a boost selection lever and, together with the Propeller Control Lever, determines the power output of the engine.
Mixture control lever: The mixture control must feel important, because it is normally coloured red to let the pilot know it can do things the other levers can’t, like stop the engine.
The mixture control simply pulls on a cable that passes through the firewall out to the engine’s carburetor. There, it operates a needle that’s like a floodgate, it can change the amount of fuel allowed through at any throttle setting.
Lower the needle into the fuel line going to the carburetor’s discharge nozzle, and it can lean the mixture for higher altitudes. Retract the needle from the fuel line opening, and it can enrich the air/fuel mixture for operations at lower altitudes.
An Otto engine can be shut down by completely leaning the mixture.
