Which one of the following conditions increases the risk for diabetes?
DIABETES
Diabetes is a chronic medical condition characterized by the body's inability to properly regulate blood sugar (glucose) levels. There are two types of Diabetes:
- Type 1: Commonly known as juvenile diabetes, this type typically appears in younger individuals. It is characterized by either an insufficient production of insulin or a complete lack of insulin production by the pancreas. To control their blood sugar levels, people with type 1 diabetes need regular insulin injections.
- Type 2: This type generally affects adults, and even pilots can be susceptible to it. It occurs either because the pancreas does not produce enough insulin to keep blood sugar levels normal, or more commonly, because the body cannot use insulin effectively (insulin resistance). Research is ongoing to better understand how insulin resistance develops. The main contributing factors are believed to be obesity, poor diet, and sedentary lifestyles.
Both types can be caused due to family history.
Diabetes type 1 → insufficient insulin production
Diabetes type 2 → insulin resistance
