BLOOD DONATION
In the blood, the red blood cells transfer oxygen in combination with haemoglobin to the body cells. After donating blood, the red blood cells amount in the blood temporarily decreases. This means that until the body recovers from this deficiency, less oxygen will be transferred to the body cells.
Hypoxia is a medical condition where there is a deficiency of oxygen in the tissues and organs of the body. As we climb to higher altitudes the oxygen partial pressure decreases. Above 10 000 ft pressure altitude the oxygen partial pressure might not be enough to cover the body needs and hypoxia symptoms might appear.
- After donating blood, oxygen being delivered to the body tissues is already reduced. This makes the individual more susceptible to hypoxia (oxygen deficiency).
