HYPOXIA

Hypoxia is a medical condition where there is a deficiency of oxygen in the tissues and organs of the body. This can occur due to various reasons, including respiratory disorders, circulatory problems, or exposure to high altitudes. Hypoxia can lead to symptoms such as:

  • shortness of breath
  • rapid heartbeat
  • confusion
  • dizziness
  • headache
  • tingling
  • muscular impairment
  • visual disturbances
  • cyanosis
  • impaired judgement
  • loss of consciousness

Visual distrubances: The eyes are affected by hypoxia very early (at low altitudes). The light-sensitive cells of the eye need large oxygen amounts to function. An impairment of night vision can occur at altitudes as low as 5000 ft. Colour perception is reduced and peripheral vision is gradually lost while hypoxia continues to develop and affect the individual.
