What clouds and weather patterns are typically observed during the passage of a cold front?
-
A
Strongly developed cumulus clouds (Cb) with showers of rain and thunderstorms, gusting wind followed by cumulus clouds with isolated showers of rain.
-
B
In coastal areas during daytime wind from the coast and forming of cumulus clouds, dissipation of clouds during evening and night.
-
C
Wind becoming calm, dissipation of clouds and warming during summer; formation of extended high fog layers during winter.
-
D
Cirrus, thickening altostratus and altocumulus clouds, lowering cloud base with rain, nimbostratus.
Refer to figure.
A cold front can be defined as cold air replacing warm air. The denser cold air overtakes and displaces the less dense warm air, sliding under it and forcing the warm air to rise.
The weather band associated with a cold front is typically 30-50 NM wide.
The first sign of the approaching front is a line of cumulonimbus clouds with associated showers and gusts. After the front passes, the cloud base rises, the clouds thin out, and precipitation decreases. Behind the front, the southward-moving polar maritime air is warmed from below, making it unstable. This instability produces scattered, isolated cumulus clouds.
