The term “True Course" (TC) is defined as...

  • A

the angle between the magnetic north and the course line.

  • B

the direction from an arbitrary point on Earth to the geographic North Pole.

  • C

the angle between true north and the course line.

  • D

the direction from an arbitrary point on Earth to the magnetic North Pole.

Refer to figure.
In order for pilots to fly in a given direction, it is necessary to be able to refer to a datum line or fixed direction whose orientation is known or can be determined. The most convenient datum is the meridian through the current position, since it is the North-South line. By convention, the direction is measured clockwise from North to the nearest degree.

TRUE DIRECTION

Direction measured with reference to True North, the direction of the North geographic pole, is said to be the True direction. All meridians indicate True North-South direction. True direction is a constant directional reference and the basis of nearly all maps and charts.

True course is the direction measured clockwise from true North to the aircraft course line.
