Determine the fuel weight in pounds, given:

Volume of the fuel: 300 litres
Specific gravity: 0.72

  • A

    476 lbs

  • B

    482 lbs

  • C

    468 lbs

  • D

    491 lbs

Specific Gravity
Specific Gravity (SG) is the ratio of the weight of a substance to the weight of an equal volume of water at a specified temperature.

Converting the litres into pounds

  • To convert litres (volume) to kilograms (mass), we simply multiply the volume in litres by the specific gravity to get the mass in kilograms (calculated below).
  • Therefore, we will first convert our 300 litres of fuel (volume) to mass in kilograms, and then convert the kilograms to pounds.

Step 1: Convert the litres (l) to kilograms (kg)

  • Kilograms (kg) = litres (l) x specific gravity
  • Kilograms (kg) = 300 l x 0.72
  • Kilograms (kg) = 216 kg

Step 2: Convert the kilograms (kg) to pounds (lbs)

  • 1 kg = 2.205 lbs
  • Therefore, 216 kg will be equal to: 216 kg x 2.205 = 476 lbs
