Given a pressure altitude of 3700 ft and a QNH of 1024 hPa, what is the actual airfield elevation above mean sea level?

  • A

    4030 ft

  • B

    3370 ft

  • C

    3700 ft

  • D

    4000 ft

This question reverses the standard pressure altitude conversion. Given pressure altitude and QNH, we have to find the elevation.

Elevation = Pressure altitude + (QNH - 1013) x 30 ft

QNH = 1024 hPa. Deviation from standard = 1024 - 1013 = +11 hPa.

If QNH is HIGHER than 1013, the actual pressure is greater than standard for that elevation, meaning the elevation is HIGHER than the pressure altitude.

Correction = 11 x 30 = 330 ft added to pressure altitude.

Elevation = 3700 + 330 = 4030 ft
