COMPOSITION OF THE ATMOSPHERE
The atmosphere consists mainly of several gases in fairly stable proportions:
- 21% oxygen
- 78% nitrogen
- 0.93% argon
- 0.03% carbon dioxide
- 0.04% trace (rare) gases
These percentages remain essentially unchanged up to around 70 000 ft, which is above the normal operating altitude of most conventional aircraft. From an aviation perspective, oxygen is the most critical gas for pilots and nitrogen is the most plentiful gas in the atmosphere.
