An individual suffering from low blood pressure may have symptoms of…
BLOOD PRESSURE
Part of any medical examination is the measurement of blood pressure, which is expressed as two numbers, such as 120/80. The first number, the systolic pressure, represents the force exerted by the heart when it contracts to pump blood throughout the body. The second number, the diastolic pressure, reflects the constant pressure within the arteries. Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). Blood pressure varies with age, but a healthy young adult usually has a systolic pressure around 120 mm Hg and a diastolic pressure near 80 mm Hg (120/80).
- If the blood pressure is low, the individual suffers from hypotension.
- If the blood pressure is high, the individual suffers from hypertension.
LOW BLOOD PRESSURE
Low blood pressure, or hypotension, typically is not dangerous. However, if it drops significantly, leading to a lack of oxygen supply to the tissues, it can result in symptoms such as
- Lethargy or fatigue
- Dizziness, blurred vision, nausea and fainting
- Decreased resistance to shock (causing fainting or collapse)
- Respiratory congestion
- Blood flow stagnation
- Diminished ability to endure positive g-forces.
