Alerting service. A service provided to notify appropriate organizations regarding aircraft in need of search and rescue aid, and assist such organizations as required.

ATSUs do not perform search and rescue operations themselves; their responsibility is to declare the appropriate emergency phase:

  • Uncertainty, 
  • Alert, 
  • or Distress

 and immediately notify the relevant Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC).
