According to AIP Africa GEN 3.6 SEARCH AND RESCUE, the remark RMK/SARNML in item 18 is used when the flight is bound for an aerodrome where an ATSU is in operation. An aerodrome where an ATSU is in operation is a controlled aerodrome.

  • An aerodrome where an ATSU is in operation. → Controlled aerodrome.
  • An aerodrome where an ATSU is NOT in operation. → Uncontrolled aerodrome.

5.3 Search and Rescue Measures with regards to Flight Plans

7) In order to avoid any misunderstanding between pilots and ATSU, Field 18 of the flight plan form must be endorsed as follows:

i) RMK/SARNML must be indicated when the flight is bound for an aerodrome where an ATSU is in operation.
RMK/SARNML must NOT be indicated when the flight is bound for an aerodrome where an ATSU IS NOT in operation. This type of SAR shall mean the following:

a) Search and rescue action will be instituted automatically in the event of a missed position report while the aircraft is flying within controlled airspace and/or in the event of non-arrival at destination.

b) Search and rescue action will not be provided while the aircraft is flying in uncontrolled airspace, except in an emergency.
