When wind details are given from the tower over the radio, what direction is this related to?
A good rule of thumb:
- What you read is TRUE, what you hear is MAGNETIC
Wind direction reported by an air traffic control tower (via voice/ATIS) is given relative to Magnetic North. This is because runway numbers and magnetic compasses in aircraft operate on magnetic, not true, headings.
However, wind direction on meteorological charts (METARs/written reports) is usually referenced to True North.
