According to the aeronautical chart, Friesach/Hirt (LOKH) has a 707 m grass runway. Prevailing runway is 17 due to a surface wind of 18010 KT. The required landing distance for your aircraft under present conditions is 550 m. Considering the NOTAM below ,is it safe to plan LOKH as an alternate aerodrome?

  • A

    No.

  • B

    Yes.

  • C

    Don't know.

  • D

    Maybe.

Refer to figure.
Alternate aerodrome is an aerodrome selected for landing, in case a landing at destination is not feasible. Either planning for the destination aerodrome, or for the alternate aerodrome, the same criteria must be met for both aerodromes in terms of performance.

An aerodrome (destination or alternate) can be selected for landing, only when the Landing Distance Required (LDR) is equal or less than the Landing Distance Available (LDA). LDA can be found in AIPs, while the LDR is extracted through the Aircraft Flight Manual (AFM) performance graphs and tables for the prevailing conditions each time (temperature, altitude, humidity, mass).

For this question, the LDA reduces from 707 m to 500 metres (707 m - 207 m), due to the the high trees 300 metres North of runway 17. The LDR is 550 metres. So, since LDR (550 m) is greater than LDA (500 m), that means that Friesach/Hirt (LOKH) aerodrome is NOT safe to to be selected as an alternate aerodrome.

The runway 35, with LDA 707 metres (greater than LDR 550 m), cannot be used due to the wind conditions 180°/10 kt. Because, if selected, the aircraft will land with tailwind component.
