Refer to figure.
With reference to the attached flight plan, what is the minimum required fuel to be loaded if fuel consumption is 8.5 USG per hour?
We are told we can assume a constant fuel consumption of 8.5 USG per hour. We can use this to calcualte how much fuel is expected to be burned for the Planned route, Diversion and Reserve fuel and then add these to the other fuels to find a total minimum fuel for the flight.
We can then calculate the expected fuel consumption for the remaining legs as follows:
- Planned Route: 8.5 x (45/60) = 6.4 USG
- Diversion: 8.5 x (17/60) = 2.4 USG
- Reserves: 8.5 x 1 = 8.5 USG
Now we add all of them together:
3 + 6.4 + 3 + 2.4 + 8.5 = 23.3 USG
We should round this up to the next whole gallon; 24 USG
Note: If we loaded 22 USG, we would be short of our minimum fuel by 1.3 USG, or around 9 minutes of flight. You can never carry any less than your minimum fuel
