2.1 INTRODUCTION

Radiotelephony (RTF) provides the means by which pilots and ground personnel communicate with each other. The information and instructions transmitted are of vital importance in the safe and expeditious operation of aircraft. Incidents and accidents have occurred in which a contributing factor has been the use of non-standard procedures and phraseology. The importance of using correct and precise standardized phraseology cannot be overemphasized.

The use of radio phraseology ensures the use of the same code during radio communication because it standardizes the way information is exchanged between pilots and air traffic controllers. Radio phraseology includes standardized words, phrases, and procedures that are universally understood in aviation. This consistency helps to minimize misunderstandings and errors in communication, promoting clear and effective transmission of information essential for safe flight operations. Therefore, adhering to radio phraseology protocols ensures that pilots and controllers use a common language and understand each other clearly, regardless of their native languages or backgrounds.
