What is True airspeed (TAS)?

  • A

IAS corrected for altitude and temperature.

  • B

RAS corrected for instrument and position errors.

  • C

RAS corrected for temperature and altitude.

  • D

IAS corrected for instrument and position errors.

True Air Speed (TAS) is the actual speed of an aircraft relative to the air through which it is flying.

TAS is important for navigation and is calculated by correcting:

  • The Rectified (RAS) or Calibrated (CAS) Air Speed for compressibility, and density (temperature and altitude).
  • The Indicated Air Speed (IAS) for instrument and position error, compressibility, and density

At Sea Level, under standard atmospheric conditions, TAS is the same as both IAS. However, as altitude increases and air density decreases, TAS becomes higher than IAS.
