In ground-to-air emergency signalling, the letter 'V' means "Require Assistance". 

  • It is used by survivors to communicate with search and rescue aircraft.
  • It is used when you are stuck, lost, or in distress and require aid but are otherwise mobile or not in immediate life-or-death danger.
